The Amgen Foundation is committed to advancing excellence and expanding access to science education. The Foundation works with expert partners to provide best-in-class, free science education programmes to teachers and students to advance science literacy, inspire the next generation of innovators and promote STEM careers.

Since 1991, the Amgen Foundation has contributed more than $450 million to non-profit organisations globally, including $270 million to science education. In 2023, the Amgen Foundation programmes reached 25 million students and educators worldwide.

  • Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE)

    Established in 1990, the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE), is an innovative science education programme that introduces secondary school/high school students to the excitement of scientific discovery and builds bridges between school and real-life biosciences. The programme provides teachers with professional development and education materials and loans research-grade equipment to high schools all at no cost. Worldwide, the programme has reached over a million students to date.

    In Ireland, the ABE programme is run in partnership with Systems Biology Ireland (SBI) at University College Dublin (UCD). To date, 215 teachers have delivered the programme in 169 schools in Ireland, with 23,700 students taking part in the programme. The Amgen Foundation has to date invested over $1 million in the ABE programme in Ireland. Amgen staff also volunteer to give career talks at participating schools.   • Amgen Scholars

    Established in 2006, the Amgen Scholars Programme is an undergraduate summer research experience hosted at 25 premier educational and research institutions across the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Canada. Participants benefit by conducting a research project under top faculty, participating in seminars and networking events and taking part in a symposium in their respective region. Throughout the programme, participants meet peers, present their research findings, learn about biotechnology and hear from leading scientists. Financial support for students is a critical component of the programme, which helps ensure that eligible students, regardless of income, can participate.

    Undergraduate students in Ireland can apply to join Amgen Scholars, which is, hosted by five leading educational institutions across Europe. These institutions are: Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (Switzerland), Institut Pasteur (France), Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Germany) and University of Cambridge (UK).   • LabXchange

    Funded by the Amgen Foundation and developed at Harvard University, LabXchange is a free, online platform for science learning that provides middle school, high school and university level teachers and students with access to personalized instruction, virtual lab experiences and networking opportunities across the global scientific community.   • Khan Academy

    Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization, founded in 2007, with the mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The full suite of Khan Academy education resources covers numerous subjects, spanning preschool through early college, with select subjects available in 50+ languages. Since 2015, the Amgen Foundation has been the exclusive sponsor of Khan Academy’s online biology resources, which include secondary school and college-level biology content.
