In 2021, Amgen globally launched a 2027 environmental sustainability plan, which includes a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality, reduce water use by 40% and cut waste disposed by 75%.

At our Ireland sites, sustainability and minimising the impact of our operations is a key focus. We prioritise building a more resilient, inclusive workplace, supporting the communities where we operate and preserving natural resources for future generations.

Manufacturing

To deliver on these ambitions, our manufacturing facility in Dún Laoghaire uses 100% renewable electrical energy and generates zero routine waste for landfill. This site has also been certified by Eco Merit.

We have installed new chillers in our central utilities building which use 30% less electricity and a new recovery unit for recycling water allows us to reuse 6 million litres of water in our cooling towers. Our validation team has introduced next-generation cleaning methodology, which has resulted in a saving of 2.2 million litres of water. This water-saving initiative was recognised at network level as the winning entry in the Environmental Champion Team awards.

Laboratories

Our Commercial Attributes Sciences Laboratory at our Dún Laoghaire site has been awarded the ‘My Green Lab Certification’. The ‘My Green Lab Certification’ programme provides actionable ways to make meaningful change through the adoption of specific ways laboratory personnel can utilize sustainability best practices.

Our Quality Control Laboratories in Dún Laoghaire have also participated in the MyGreenLab freezer challenge, this challenge is a global competition for laboratories that promotes best practices in cold storage management.

Facilities

At our manufacturing sites we have installed 34 electric charging points in our car parks and staff can avail of the government’s Bike to Work scheme, to purchase a bike and cycling equipment up to the value of up to €1,500.

In 2020, we introduced a ‘Keep Cup’ for everyone working at our Dún Laoghaire site to replace single use disposable drinking cups and will be introducing this initiative at our Waterford site by the end of 2024.

Building on this commitment, at our Dún Laoghaire site all takeaway boxes and cutlery are compostable, tea bags are biodegradable and our on-site garden supplies fresh herbs. Additionally, the menus in our canteens are carefully planned to ensure all ingredients can be used throughout the week.

Green Team

Our Green Team at Dún Laoghaire site create awareness of environmental sustainability initiatives among our staff. They also organise community outreach events such as tree planting with the local council and beach cleanups which staff volunteer at as well as educational talks on home insulation and sustainable gardening.
